The United States electoral campaign enters its most critical phase this week, when President Donald Trump and his Democratic opponent Joe Biden face each other in their first televised debate.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Mr Biden has largely avoided normal electoral hustings, so this will be the first opportunity American voters will get to watch the candidates delivering blows on each other in an unscripted environment.
