It may be scant consolation in a sorry season but at least Everton's worst nightmare cannot become reality. Liverpool will not win the title at Goodison Park, as long seemed possible. It would have been a symbolic triumph if they had, and not merely because 45 points already separate the neighbours. The Merseyside derby has become England's most one-sided top-flight rivalry.
A transformation in Liverpool's fortunes began with a rare low for them. Everton have not beaten Liverpool at Anfield since 1999 or Goodison Park since 2010.
