SINGAPORE – Recently, I was out buying lunch for my mother and myself when I realised that I didn’t bring my wallet out. No problem, I could just pay with my phone, I thought.

I was able to pay for my mum’s porridge at one stall via the DBS PayLah! app, but the stall where I bought my food did not accept cashless payments.
