One recent evening, when an early dinner in Katong led me to explore Joo Chiat Road after nearly two years, I was startled by how crowded the junction of Joo Chiat Road and East Coast Road was.

Lifestyle restaurant chains Awfully Chocolate, Brotzeit, Prive and PS Cafe now dominate the traffic square on three sides.
