Growing up in a Mandarin-speaking family, the language and I had a torrid relationship. However, with the passage of time, I now see Mandarin differently and understand why I felt the way I did.
When I was growing up, Mandarin was the language used in reprimands and stifling edicts issued at home, making this one of several reasons – both personal and social – to not know it too well.
