Why is buying holiday gifts so stressful?

Most of the presents we choose for others are hit-and-miss. So why do we keep buying them anyway?

I am not that great at buying gifts. 

I once bought my friends a pricey notebook titled: Things My Kids Say, with specific columns on each page to record which kid said what, how old they were, where they were, and what they said, even though any notebook could have been used for the same purpose and would have been more versatile. One of my friends ended up using it to write her weekly grocery list.
