SINGAPORE - Ten-year-old Austin Hoo has been hoping to visit the Singapore Science Centre but his mother is too busy with work.
However, his wish will be granted soon.
Grassroots leaders in his Jurong neighbourhood will be organising visits for children from low-income families living in the area to the Singapore Science Centre during the school holidays.
The visits are part of an enrichment programme organised by the South West Community Development Council for 80 children from low-income families in Jurong Central.
The programme will include science workshops as well as activities and visits to cultural and heritage sites. Youth volunteers from the Science Centre, Institute of Technical Education and staff from General Electric have been roped in to organise the activities.
The enrichment programme was launched on Sunday (June 14) at a community event in Jurong East by South West District mayor Low Yen Ling and Jurong GRC Member of Parliament Ang Wei Neng.
Mr Ang told reporters at the sidelines of the event that many of the 80 children involved in the programme live in rental flats and have parents who both work.
"We want to expose them to activities that they don't have a chance to take part in," he said.
Ms Low said: "We want to build the confidence of the children and we hope that the volunteers can be their role models."
