LONDON – Luton Town striker Carlton Morris reported an alleged racist comment from the home crowd during their English Premier League game at Sheffield United on Dec 26, his club have said, an incident which is currently investigated by the police.

He reported the comment to the match officials in line with Premier League protocols, the Hatters added after a 3-2 victory over their fellow relegation strugglers.

“The matter was dealt with immediately by both Sheffield United and South Yorkshire Police, who are currently investigating,” the club said in a statement.

“We would like to thank both Sheffield United officials and the police for their swift actions in dealing with today’s incident.”

The Premier League condemned the incident in a post on social media.

“Racism has no place in our game or anywhere in society and we encourage anyone who hears or sees discrimination to report it so action can be taken,” the league said on X.

“We will offer our full support to Carlton Morris and Luton Town FC, as well as continuing to work with clubs and authorities to ensure our stadiums are an inclusive and welcoming environment for all.”

Jack Robinson and Anis Ben Slimane scored own goals in the final 13 minutes, as Sheffield let a late lead slip and lost in front of their home fans at Bramall Lane.

Luton took the lead in the first half through Alfie Doughty but a strong second-half showing from the Blades turned the game on its head, as Oli McBurnie netted and Anel Ahmedhodzic scored his first Premier League goal.

Having worked so hard to get in front, however, the home side then surrendered their lead in cruel fashion with their two own goals.

Luton stayed in 18th position but moved to 15 points from 18 games, one point from safety, while Sheffield remained rooted to the bottom of the standings with nine points from 19 matches, two points behind Burnley.

“It was a roller coaster of emotions. We were 2-1 down and then you think about what that means to the table. It’s a crazy day,” Luton winger Andros Townsend told Amazon Prime.

“It’s sensational (to win back-to-back games after the 1-0 victory over Newcastle United). Whether you’re a top side or not, it’s so hard to do in the Premier League.

“We were ahead against Liverpool and Arsenal and we didn’t get three points in those games. It’s about time we got some luck.”
